Copper Creek--Truly a special occasion place

Copper Creek is the best restaurant in Abilene. My husband and I went there for our anniversary supper. We ordered boiled shrimp for an appetizer but were told they didn't have any cooked and chilled, it would be a 30 minute wait so we decided to forgo it. Oh well. Instead, we shared a bowl of lobster bisque. Soup and salad do not come with the entrees. The bisque had a spicy kick...could have had a bit more lobster meat in it but the flavor was delicious. You do get fresh baked sourdough bread with your meal.

For dinner, he got Mahi Florentine served with a crawfish cream sauce and rice pilaf. It was a large portion of delicate fish. He was pleased. I ordered the Texas Wellington, a filet of beef with green chili strips inside a puff pastry with a luscious green chili and jack cheese sauce on top. It was served with garlic mashed potatoes and roasted carrots. That steak was absolutely the BEST thing I have ever eaten at a restaurant within the Abilene city limits. It was cooked perfectly and the mix of flavors was fantastic. My first bite was heaven. Disclaimer: I  love green chili.  For dessert we had a Snickers cheesecake.  Presentation was attractive and the taste was yummy.

Over the past few years, I have eaten at Copper Creek at least a dozen times and I have always wondered about the Texas Wellington but have tended to order seafood since they offer fish dishes that you can't find anywhere else in town. Everything I have ever eaten has been good to very good but the Wellington was outstanding.

The decor is upscale rustic. Leather booths, fireplaces and animal heads on the wall but with white tablecloths and an impressive menu and wine list. The bar area is "fanciest" in town. They also have a great patio and live music out there on the weekends during warm weather. Prices are reasonable for the high quality of food you are served but to save some money go for lunch. Waitstaff are usually quite attentive. Our server last night was excellent.

Sorry, no pictures.  I was too hungry!
