It is not secret that when I visit San Angelo eating Mexican food is often on my list of things to do. Recently, I went to visit my niece there who recently graduated from Angelo State and took her to lunch there. Despite having gone to college in San Angelo she had somehow missed eating at this local institution.

You do need to expect a wait but it is not usually too long because the restaurant is large. Henry's is very popular--for a reason. We went on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and because there were only two of us, it only took about 20 minutes. There were several large family groups waiting to be seated.

The décor is colorful. It isn't a quiet restaurant when it is busy but everyone seemed to be in a good mood and enjoying themselves. The service was very attentive and food came out fast. Of course, complimentary chips and salsa are served. Ask for the white sauce too if your like a creamy dip for your chips. It is garlicy and reminds me of something between aioli sauce and ranch dressing. 

My niece ordered the beef enchilada plate with chili con carne sauce and I got the chicken flauta plate. Bothe came with beans and rice. I have the choice of lettuce or cabbage with my flautas. They were topped with avocado sauce. I enjoyed the refried beans but the rice was a little dry but I do not usually eat the rice much anyway. 

Usually it get the tres colores enchiladas but this time I varied my routine. The flautas were calling my name.  Everything was tasty and we did not leave the least but unsatisfied with our meal. I miss when Henry's had a sister restaurant in Abilene called Enrique's which was one of my "go to" places for comfort food and a great burger as well.

The next time you are in San Angelo, give them a go. I think you will enjoy the food and leave in a good mood.

It is De-Luscious! Lonestar Cheeseburger Company--San Angelo

The Lonestar Cheeseburger Company is a chef-owned food truck that serves up some delightful burgers in San Angelo, Texas. There are a couple of picnic tables outside the truck but this is primarily an order and eat in your car or take-out type of place.

I ordered the El Paso burger which was the chef special of the day. It was a 1/3 Angus beef patty cooked on a wood-fired grill with melted American cheese, bacon, sauteed green peppers and onions, jalapenos, a homemade onion ring and the house-made mayo. Scrumptious! The ingredients came together really well. I like onions on a burger but prefer that they are cooked. The meat had wonderful flavor and wasn't overdone, very juicy. The bun was fresh and toasted on the grill. I'd say it is one of the best burgers I have had in a very long time. The cost for the burger itself was $5.99 and I added some fries and a drink to make it a combo for $1.99 more. All they needed was Diet Dr. Pepper instead of just Diet Pepsi, so I was forced to drink a regular DP (like the calories matter at this point). My 6'8" husband got a traditional double meat cheeseburger and he didn't leave hungry! The quality ingredients make the hamburger worth the higher price than fast food places. Also, notice the late hours on Friday and Saturday nights.

If you are in the Concho Valley and need a burger fix head to downtown San Angelo and grab one of these burgers and eat it by the river which only a block or two away.

Oh, the good ole' days. I have fond memories of eating at the original Zentner's Steakhouse and Zentner's Daughter Steakhouse in San Angelo, TX, on weekend trips when I was a kid and again as a freshman college student at Angelo State University. For a while there was a Zentner's Daughter location in Abilene but it closed within a few years.

Back then, when you ordered a burger you got a 1/2 pound patty on the bun and another one on the side. That practice went away years ago. My mom's favorite item on the menu was the HUGE fry basket of homemade onion rings. They were delicious and enough to feed a large family.

The hubby and I were in San Angelo recently and we decided to have lunch at Zentner's Daughter. It was about 1:15pm when we arrived, the place was practically deserted at lunch on a weekday. Not an encouraging sign. We were led to a booth in the bar area where other customers were seated instead of the empty main dining room. The menu was large but we decided to stick with the basics. I had a hamburger and some potato soup. My husband ordered the chicken-fried steak with a salad and fries. Even though we knew we couldn't finish them we also got some onion rings as an appetizer. Service was efficient if not especially friendly. We did get a visit from one of the owners and he was quite cordial.

The onion rings were still plentiful but something was missing. Probably the trans-fat in the oil. They were flavorful but not as flavorful. The burger had flavor but the bun wasn't warm and the toppings were skimpy. My potato soup was homemade and very tasty. The chicken-fry was very tender but not particularly large and the breading kept falling off. The gravy was good. The french fries were homemade but not hot enough. They also offer a daily lunch special. The meal just didn't standout from what is offered at all the other steakhouses, even the chains.

The the glory days are over for Zentner's Daughter. We would eat there again if we were with people who wanted to go but it isn't worth a special trip.
